About Kibo

Kibo is an online university that offers STEM degrees to African students, starting with computer science.  We offer free 5-week introductory programming classes, and a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science which will launch in October.  We’re on a mission to educate the next billion by using technology to deliver affordable and high-quality learning at scale.  We were recently selected as the winner of the GSV Cup from among 750+ global pre-seed and seed stage startups; you can watch the presentation to learn more about our why.

What You’ll Do

The Head of Operations will be a critical member of the leadership team, joining Ope (CEO), Keno (CAO), and Rob (CS Curriculum) to define and execute on Kibo’s vision and strategy. Your key responsibilities will be:

  • Own Marketing & Recruitment: you will help to tell Kibo’s story and attract and enroll students in our programs
    • Hire and manage team of local Program Managers who will do outreach in Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya, as well as a digital marketing team
    • Oversee all aspects of student recruitment and enrollment, including operations, program development, quality, people and staff development and more
    • Immediate KPI: admit and enroll at least 100 students in degree program
  • Build strategic partnerships that help to grow our business and increase our impact, e.g.,
    • Connect with university partners in target regions to pilot joint degree programs
    • Build partnerships with employers and, in collaboration with academic team, ensure job readiness is built into our teaching and learning
    • Partner with institutions that can support students learning and growth, e.g., financing partners, local hubs and co-working spaces, mental health services, etc.
    • Partner with NGOs to expand the reach of our free programs, and build pipelines for the degree
  • Collaborate with CEO and leadership team on other aspects of company operations as needed including but not limited to finance, HR, and Legal

Who You Are

  • Mission-aligned, and excited by Kibo’s mission and vision
  • Ambitious, optimistic, and entrepreneurial: why not build a new college from scratch?!? You are excited about attempting to tackle a problem/market many people have dismissed. You can stay aligned on vision and strategy, while accepting that tactics inevitably change
  • An experienced leader: you have 10+ years of professional experience, and a proven record of leading and expanding operations. You’ve led teams, and built things from the ground up. You’re excited to coach early career colleagues and make working at Kibo a transformative experience for them
  • Tech-savvy and efficient: you’re proficient with CRM, automation, and database tools. You love using tech to automate processes, and are comfortable and confident learning new tools
  • Willing to do grunt work: our collective superpower is our “can do” spirit and willingness to roll up our sleeves to serve learners and make the mission work. Our Head of Learning has done community management, our Head of Curriculum has done IT support, our CEO will do data entry. We’re looking for someone who is able to strategize and execute, and is excited to do the work, not just manage it.
  • Excellent written communicator: As a remote-first, globally distributed startup, we spend a lot of time communicating in writing and documenting our processes. Clear, structured, and well-organized writing is a must
  • A teacher at heart: we value leaders with experience teaching and who continue to teach. Everyone on our leadership team has designed curriculum and taught in various capacities, and has deep empathy for the struggles and joys of the learning process.
